It shows an incubus - a demon of nightmare - squatting on a sleeping woman, while an eerie horse pokes its head through a curtain. The horse stands for wild, unfettered nature and for sexual desire, which acquires a tantalising insinuation in connection with the female body and which helped the painting to become one of the most famous and frequently referred to works of art in Europe.
